Rising Conservative Star: Matthew Walker

July 3, 2013

Matthew Walker, son of Governor Scott Walker

Matthew Walker is a rising star at Marquette University (MU), and it’s not because of his last name. Son of Wisconsin’s famed Governor, Scott Walker; Matthew is making a name for himself on campus within the conservative movement.

This past spring, Matthew was very involved on campus and was elected to co-chair the College Republicans (CRs) at Marquette as a freshman. He was instrumental in orchestrating a firearm safety event through the CRs. The group invited Marquette students to a gun range for a safety event and a day of shooting all types of firearms ranging from small, concealable pistols to shotguns. Walker organized the event in an effort to make the dialogue of gun control more pertinent to students.

Matthew attended one of the American Majority- Campus Majority training events over his winter break.  Overall, he found it “interesting and informative.” The most important takeaway was the connections made with students who came from numerous different universities across Wisconsin. These connections have helped build a strong foundation to empower conservative students on campus across the state.

Matthew’s interest in politics and leadership has been brewing since he was born. His family has been deeply involved with Wisconsin politics ever since his dad ran for his first position in government just before his birth in 1994.  “My dad has set a great example for me to be a leader and I feel like government can provide me with the same opportunities of leadership that my dad has had in the past.”

Double majoring in Political Science and Economics, Matthew looks to build off this foundation to grow the CR’s at Marquette. “I hope to bring in conservative speakers through partner organizations, like Young Americans for Freedom and others, to help develop a strong conservative following on campus and in the surrounding community.”

Matthew hopes to get students on campus involved. “Marquette has one of the top business schools in the country, and naturally, business students are conservative-minded.” With business majors included, Matthew hopes to create a conservative coalition on campus to revolutionize the conservative movement.

This summer Matthew mentored high school students at Badger Boys State, a youth program held each June to teach Wisconsin high-school students leadership and the workings of government. Matthew looks forward to a future in politics and will step up this fall as the South East Regional Director for the Wisconsin Federation of College Republicans. As he follows in the path of his father, Matthew is making a name for himself as a rising star within the conservative movement.
