My New Year’s Resolution for You

January 20, 2010

With 2010 starting off to a bang I know that many of us have taken on traditional “New Year’s Resolutions.” For most people these include gym memberships, promises to loose some weight, stop smoking or in some way curb an unhealthy activity. However, the resolution that I charge you with doesn’t require you to eat one less snickerdoodle or  run one more mile…although I’m sure that the constantly athletic Ryun brothers would encourage those resolutions as well.

My resolution for each of you centers on American Majority’s mission of empowering individual conservatives to make a tangible difference in their communities, states and, ultimately, nation. If we want to convert the conservative energy that has been aroused over the last year into meaningful action then we need to turn protests into votes and votes into conservative elected officials.

I guess that the first two paragraphs were basically a drum roll…but without further adieu, here is my resolution for you: Either run for local public office or recruit someone around you to run and help them achieve that goal.

For decades, liberals have packed city councils and school boards with members favorable to restrictive business practices, rising tax rates and educational philosophies which fail to acknowledge this nation’s heritage. Conservatives have allowed this to happen through inaction and apathy.

As I have trained activists and candidates around Texas, I have heard time and time again people say how tired they are of people seeking public office for their own ego or resume…and yet they have never been proactive in finding real public servants to run for office. The only alternative to allowing ego-driven individuals to push themselves into office is to raise up strong conservatives from our midst. This means changing how most conservatives view the political process: Every one of you should be a political recruiter.

Running for local office is in general a very manageable undertaking. With the benefit of proper candidate training, you can employ a sophisticated campaign plan with relative ease. What’s more, in many smaller towns it may only take a few hundred votes to secure a place on the city council!

Have you ever thought about running for office? Why not?

If you are interested in taking on this resolution, American Majority stands ready to help you. Contact us and let us know how we can assist you in improving your community.

I hope that you will accept this challenge!

In the current Congress, 69% of the House and 74% of the Senate started at the state and local levels. In fact, Dick Lugar of IN started on a school board.

People need to start small, think big, and act.
